SOIL Refuses To Play Club Where DIMEBAG Was Murdered

September 26, 2006

Chicago's SOIL has refused to play the October 26, 2006 date of the MUSHROOMHEAD/SOIL tour at Columbus, Ohio's Alrosa Villa — the club where PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was murdered. "We find it in bad taste that the club is even still standing," said guitarist Shaun Glass. "I would be sick to my stomach to just walk into that place". Bassist Tim King added, "Maybe other bands can play the club and not be bothered by what happened in there, but as close as we were with Dime and the DAMAGEPLAN camp, we would be unable to get on that stage without breaking down. We hope our fans will understand and respect our decision."

Dimebag's brother/bandmate, DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul, DAMAGEPLAN tour manager Chris Paluska and drum tech John Brooks filed a lawsuit against Alrosa Villa last December, claiming that "there was inadequate security provided at the music venue given the nature and size of the crowd and previous incidents at the club involving criminal activity," according to attorney Gerald Leeseberg, who represented the trio at the time of the filing.

On December 8, 2004 ex-Marine Nathan Gale rushed the stage at the club and opened fire with a 9mm gun, killing Dimebag, DAMAGEPLAN bodyguard Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson, fan Nathan Bray and club worker Erin Halk, and injuring two — Paluska and Brooks.

Leeseberg told MTV.com one of the other claims in the suit is that the security that was provided performed "horribly" in that they were aware of Gale's suspicious behavior prior to the shooting. "They watched him scale the security fence and gain access to the club and for reasons to be determined, he was allowed to go through the crowd and begin firing a weapon," Leeseberg said. "He was carrying a weapon and 50 rounds of ammunition, all of this with the knowledge of security that this individual was behaving strangely and they did nothing to stop him."
